Flow Chart to Solve Company Problems

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

A colleague recently sent me the above interesting powerpoint flow chart to solve company problems (zipped PPS file, 32KB). “Just for sharing,” she said. But now every time she utters “There Is No Problem”, we’ll be looking into her eyes wondering;-)

  1. What she haven’t touched.
  2. What she is hiding.
  3. What she is pretending not to have seen.
  4. Who she found to blame.

  • If It Works, You Can Break It – by Joshua Levine, 20 December 2004. “Estonians like to look behind the thing and wonder whether there’s anything we can change about it. In Estonia you might say, if it works, you can break it.
  • Did HR Cause The Downfall of Enron? – by Dr John Sullivan touches on not hiding problems. “Employees must be able to make mistakes and then to report them rapidly. That’s how organizations learn. In reverse, having large penalties for failure can encourage secrecy and the “hiding” of mistakes, so that no one learns from them.
  • Exorcise Blame In Your Company – by Robert Bacal says we should “separate the process of blaming from the process of making things better … While Edward Deming tells us to ‘drive out fear’, we should also be prepared to ‘drive out blame’ from our workplaces. Perhaps the single most important barrier to improvement is blame“.

Wordpress SEO Scandals

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

I just found out about this “Wordpress SEO Scandal” and Matt’s responses from blewtooth’s visa blog

Finally Matt (the creator of Wordpress) had a chance to make a response to the recent WordPress SEO scandal.

… that seems to me about “ads” and “google spamming”, not that it changed my view of how useful free WordPress is to me. :-)

Siti Nurhaliza at The Royal Albert Hall

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

One of my favourite Malaysian blogger in London went to Siti’s concert on 1st April 2005 and she (Ewok) wrote

It’s quite amazing to see so many Malaysians outside the venue waiting and greeting friends. Aci sebenarnya tak mau pergi but I managed to pursuade her since I wanted to see the inside view of The Royal Albert Hall. The capacity for the hall, I think, is 3,374 and according to Datuk TV3, whom we met and chatted before the show, the turnout was over 2,000 people. Not bad for a lass from Kuala Lipis. [...]
Cindai was the last song performed and she got us dancing again. Oh! She used to be so kaku when she performed but this time around, I was quite surprised with her lenggok and gemalai tari (pardon my bahasa). She sure learned a lot in that department, even though she didn’t jump up and down on the stage like Gwen Stefani. I love Gwen.

… there’s some photos of Siti in action on her blog, even photo of Anuar Zin with her Aci. ;-) I wondered what others will say about the concert …

  • Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin poses in front a poster – 28 March 2005, AFP/Roslan Rahman. “[Siti Nurhaliza] Taruddin will be the first Malaysian and third Asian artist after Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar and renowned sitarist Ravi Shankar to hold a solo concert at the famous London venue [Royal Albert Hall].
  • Royal Albert Hall Kensington Siti Nurhaliza, Friday 1st April 2005, “SOLD OUT”. Show Times 7pm. Stalls £80.00 per person and Grand Tier Box £150.00 per person. “She is Asia’s best – kept secret. Blessed with an amazing vocal talent, natural beauty and a unique sound, Siti Nurhaliza, Malaysia’s No 1 songbird takes centre stage at the Royal Albert Hall. This historical two-hour concert will showcase a decade’s worth of her original works with distinct musical flavour that will inevitably unveil her enormous talent, musical excellence and stunning personality.
  • The Star: Siti Nurhaliza wows London with wit and elegance – by Choi Tuck Wo, 3 April 2005. “The diva had the 2,500 near-capacity crowd eating out of her hand as she unleashed her amazing vocal talent during the two-hour concert. Hailed as the ‘Celine Dion of Malaysia’ by three BBC radio stations, the 26-year-old singing sensation was a joy to watch as she combined her powerful voice with her stunning elegance … Among the VIPs present were the Sultan and Sultanah of Pahang, the Deputy Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, 27 members of the Brunei royal family and the Malaysian High Commissioner to Britain Datuk Abdul Aziz Mohammad.
  • NST: Siti Nurhaliza takes Royal Albert Hall by storm – by Zaharah Othman in London, 3 April 2005. “Malaysian singing sensation Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin took the Royal Albert Hall by storm on Friday night after a two-hour performance, earning her an invitation back to perform at the prestigious venue by its Chief Executive Officer, David Elliott.

Civic Concept Car Geneva 2005

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

Honda Civic Concept Car launched in Geneva on 1 Mar 2005 …

Honda today unveiled the ‘Civic Concept’ – a five door hatchback designed exclusively for the European market. Due for introduction in early 2006 …

… with the rear doors nicely hidden, so the image shown seems 3 doors rather than 5 doors. I’m looking forward to this one. ;-)

  • Honda Civic Concept – European Spec Five-Door – blog by Walter J Keegan Jr, 1 Mar 2005. “european-spec Honda Civic five-door concept … with a hatch and hidden rear doors.”
  • Honda Debuts Civic Concept – 2005 Geneva Motor Show highlights. “the concept that is ‘very close’ to the next generation Civic, is visually a lot more exciting, with an aggressive wedge profile and a four-door layout that looks much more like a two-door coupe – and a very sporty one, too.”
  • Geneva Motor Show 2005: Honda – special report. “you can forget the concept part of that, because apart from having over-large wheels and tyres, the five-door car you see here is the one that you’ll be able to buy in the UK from January next year … will be available with Honda’s smooth 2.2-litre turbodiesel as well as new petrol engines”

Hybrid Diesel Electric Locomotive

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

Wired’s Stephen Leahy on 25 Mar 2005 wrote about …

Hybrid cars, trucks and buses have already hit the road. Now, make way for the Green Goat, the world’s biggest hybrid. It’s a 2,000-horsepower locomotive that radically reduces fuel consumption and emissions of pollutants.
The Green Goat is a diesel-electric hybrid in which the normal massive diesel locomotive engine is replaced by a 290-horsepower inline 6-cylinder diesel truck engine and a 600-volt battery bank. The batteries supply the power needed to drive the electric traction motors on the wheels of this 280,000-pound “goat.”
Goat is railroad lingo for the smaller locomotives used for moving rail cars around over short distances.
[...]

… could this “hybrid diesel electric” technology be used for cheaper LRT system in Klang Valley?

  • RailPower Technologies Corp – developer of the Green Goat.
  • Train Scan October 2001 – news of RailPower Technologies demo Green Goat, including pictures and diagram.
  • First prototype of a hybrid diesel-electric rail car – May 2003 article about East Japan Railway Company’s NE Train. “The diesel engine drives the generator, and the generator supplies electricity to the electric motors that drive the ! wheels. In the future, this system can be adapted to a fuel cell system by simply replacing the engine and the generator with fuel cell stacks.”
  • TriMet Hybrid Diesel-Electric Buses – manufactured by New Flyer of America. “Its diesel engine powers an electrical generator which charges a battery pack on the roof. The batteries then power an electric motor that turns the wheels. (The diesel engine also powers the air conditioning.) When the bus slows down during braking, it sends extra energy to further charge the batteries.”
  • Low cost, hybrid diesel/electric ultra-light rail Minitram – manufactured by Green Motorsport Limited UK, pre production mid 2004. “The Kalamata ULR system will comprise a 5km route of conventional metre-gauge tramway track, a depot, 23 stops and eight hybrid diesel electric trams, each with 45-passenger capacity. It is expected that with the associated civil works, to be carried out by a local contractor, the total project cost will amount to around EUR 8 million (£5 million). This represents only 10% of the cost of building a conventional light rail system.”

Just caught the first episode of “The Apprentice, Season Two” tonight on Astro

The Apprentice (S2)
31-Mar-2005 10:00:00 PM
Eighteen candidates from all walks of life ranging in age between 23 and 37, featuring four Harvard graduates and three folks with degrees from the Wharton School of Finance, plus street entrepreneurs with no college education, will tackle the rigorous business tasks as assigned. Prominent Fortune 500 companies were enlisted to participate in many of the tasks which will test their intelligence, chutzpah and street-smarts. The competition and the boardroom drama will all be taken to the next level during the second season. The candidates will face far more intense tasks and the stakes will be much higher. As the winner of the competition, the second “apprentice” will be granted the dream job of a lifetime with The Trump Organization and a hefty six-figure salary.

… good show, though I hate Trump’s style or mannerism. :-/
