Moving to WordPress on a webhost with MySQL and PHP

It has been more than a year of using Blogger for my blog. It provides free web-based software and database storing my blogs and generate static HTML pages that gets automatically uploaded to my webhost. This is quite convenient but has its limitation.

Recently Newsguy provided my account there with facility of using MySQL and PHP. That combination is one of the mainstay of open source content management system. A quick googling got me to the superb test site for MySQL and PHP CMS programs.

After some testing and travails I've chosen and managed to get WordPress running on my Newsguy site. These are the new features it gives ...

  • sorting my blogs into categories
  • searching and displaying my blogs with certain key strings
  • commenting on my blogs
  • pingbacks and trackbacks (when I find what those are :-/)

... and I see more WordPress features in the future. I understand these features are available because it dynamically generate the pages via MySQL and PHP.

See you there ;-)

Sony Vaio PCG U101

I was writing about Vaio PCG-U1 sometime back. I've just found that after morphing into slightly faster PCG-U3, it has transformed into PCG-U101 using the faster Celeron M processor and comes complete with built in WiFi. Truly my current dream machine. ;-)

Discussions on PCG-U101 (and its older brothers) can be found on Yahoogroups Vaio_U1.

Long Time No See

Yep, it has been Long Time No See for me. Unfortunately, real life changes took much time. I hope things have settled enough for me to continue regular blogging. ;-)

Langkawi Cable Car

Unfortunately its website at www.langkawicablecar.com is still "Under Construction". Whois gives:
Registrant: Langkawi Cable Car Sdn Bhd, Cable Car Station, Oriental Village, Jalan Telaga Tujuh, Langkawi, Kedah 07100, MY Tel: 604 9593688 Fax:604 9593877
Administrative Contact: Salleh, Azmina algk@pd.jaring.my

Nevertheless here are some articles I've found about it.

  • The Star 22 July 2002 article about Austrian expertise in Malaysia.
The cable-car link up the 708m Gunung Macincang in Pulau Langkawi is being handled by Doppelmayr of Austria. “Doppelmayr is a world-renowned firm in the construction of cable cars. The Langkawi cable-car project is going well,’’ [Oswald Soukop, Austrian Ambassador to Malaysia] added.
  • MGG's Langkawi Entrapment 2 Jun 2000 article about Pulau Langkawi's development.
Meanwhile, construction of a RM50 million cable-car up Gunung Macincang is about to begin. A similar cable car, built over Bukit Nanas in Kuala Lumpur, was dismantled after the initial enthusiasm evaporated.
  • Doppelmayr Ropeways provides some information on similar 6-person gondola ropeways.
The gondolas are attached to the haul rope with detachable grips for safe and easy loading and unloading, with the carriers travelling through the terminals at creep speed before accelerating to a line speed of up to 6 m/s.

Stars, Cartoons and Googling

Wah, a month has passes without me blogging. Time passes quickly when you're having fun, eh? A friend showed me this nice amateur astronomy site, where I'm sure to revisit. If only there ain't too much light pollution in Klang for the stars. :-(

Another friend who thinks I smile too much, lead me to this User Friendly cartoon site, that I really like. I think Illiad gives Scott Adam's Dilbert a fight. :-)

Talking about fights, if you haven't, do try out GoogleFight. Some you might like to test out ;-)
